A FESTIVE ESCAPE ABOVE THE FRENZY: ALF’S AT THE ALFRED TENNYSON

A FESTIVE ESCAPE ABOVE THE FRENZY: ALF’S AT THE ALFRED TENNYSON

A Tale of Two Tempos: Belgravia at Christmas

The season may still be gathering steam, but at Cubitt House, we’re already warming up to the good stuff. Because when it comes to Christmas in London, there’s no better place to embrace a little merriment than in Belgravia.

London is full of world-renowned shopping destinations, but there’s nothing quite like a festive pilgrimage to one of the capital’s most storied department stores. Harrods, of course, needs no introduction. Sitting proudly on Brompton Road, its iconic windows are a seasonal spectacle, drawing in every passer-by with the promise of Christmas indulgence inside, and rightly so.

Wander through its grand halls and you’ll find yourself swept up in a world of baubles, perfectly wrapped hampers and the scent of roasted chestnuts lingering in the air. This corner of SW1 is difficult to beat at the best of times, but when the season calls for a festive cheer and a cosy atmosphere, it becomes downright irresistible.

And if atmosphere is what you’re after, Hyde Park delivers. With Winter Wonderland back in full swing with festive rides, mulled wine stalls and general merriment, the energy in the area is undeniable. But after a few hours navigating the gift gauntlet or wandering through Winter Wonderland’s tinsel-clad villages, even the most festive among us could use a breather.

Enter Alf’s.

On Harrods’ Doorstep: Alf’s at The Alfred Tennyson

Just a ten-minute walk from Harrods, tucked away on peaceful Motcomb Street, Alf’s is our newly opened upstairs restaurant at The Alfred Tennyson. Housed in a handsome Georgian townhouse, it’s a serene little hideaway with just the right touch of festive polish. A place where soft lighting meets old-school charm, and the hum of conversation feels like a warm embrace.

While Alf’s is relaxed, it’s still the kind of spot where a thoughtfully curated wine list is in your hands before your coat’s even off. The Martinis are cold, the room’s warm, and the menu delivers British and French classics served with flair. It’s festive, but without the fuss.

It’s festive in all the right ways: polished, welcoming and completely fuss-free.

Classic Dishes Reimagined with Cubitt House

Of course, Alf’s pulls out all the stops food-wise, too. For the table, why not order our Warm Sourdough Baguette with Salted Butter or the Parmesan Beignets with Truffle Honey? To start, there’s nothing better than our exquisite Leeks Vinaigrette with Caperberries and Hazelnuts, a seasonal dish to get your taste buds going.

For the main event, be sure to try the Roast Chicken and Chanterelles with Truffle Sauce or the Market Fish, Hand Cut Chips and Tartare Sauce for a pub classic. Keeping things light? The Roquefort, Chicory, Pear and Walnut Salad offers the ideal palate cleanser before plunging back into the Christmas fray.

Upstairs, Downstairs at The Alfred Tennyson

If Alf’s is all calm elegance, the downstairs pub brings the energy. A beloved haunt for Belgravia locals, it’s a lively, light-filled room where polished wood, well-poured pints and the steady rhythm of conversation create a buzz that’s hard to resist. This is where neighbours gather, old friends reconnect, and newcomers are welcomed in like regulars.

Whether you’re nipping in for a pint post-Harrods or settling in for a long, leisurely Sunday Roast, it’s a proper neighbourhood pub that does things the right way: hearty seasonal fare, cracking drinks and the sort of sincere hospitality that’s become harder to come by.

So whether you’re seeking solace after a spin round the shops, looking for a festive table with your nearest and dearest, or simply chasing that unmistakable pub feeling, The Alfred Tennyson delivers. A festive escape above the frenzy, and the beating heart of Belgravia below – it’s Cubitt House style through and through.
