Famous for its Monopoly board train station, Marylebone is slap bang in the centre of London, north of Oxford Street and bordered by Regents Park. Londoners are often guilty of rushing through it rather than stopping to see the sights, of which there are many, which makes it a great option for a weekend staycation in the city. Meanwhile, for tourists, it’s a great base from which to learn more about what makes the British capital tick, whether that’s our literary history (see: Sherlock Holmes) or our love of classic pub grub (case in point, The Grazing Goat).
What to do in Marylebone
Catch the tube to Baker Street Station (one of the handiest in London, with the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Circle, District, Metropolitan and Hammersmith and City lines) if you want to visit two of London’s most famous attractions, the Planetarium and Madame Tussauds, which are next door to each other. If stars (both waxwork Hollywood ones and interstellar ones) aren’t your thing, then instead amble over to the Sherlock Holmes museum, which is on the site of his former home on Baker Street, where you can learn more about the famous author. Then there’s the Wellcome Collection, one of London’s finest museums, and Wigmore Hall, great for seeing some live music. You’re also close to Regents Park, home of London ZSL Zoo, if you want to go for a wander in a green space. In the summer, there are shows at the outdoor theatre that you can see, so it’s worth checking that out too.

Where to eat & stay in Marylebone
Unsurprisingly considering its central location, there are multiple hotels to stay in around Marylebone, but why not choose a pub with rooms, instead? After all, you can’t get more quintessentially British, and it’s particularly good if you want something a little more personal and intimate, rather than being another guest on the hotel conveyor belt. The Grazing Goat Boutique Hotel, handily located near Oxford Circus Tube station, is ideal for just this, with eight guest bedrooms above the pub. With a menu of British classics to tick off – from the Full English breakfast to scotch eggs, fish and chips and Sunday roasts – it’s also a great base for your British culinary education to begin.
Shopping in Marylebone
Avoid the chaos of Oxford Street and instead wander up and down the much more pleasant Marylebone High Street, which boasts a roll-call of chic shops, including Aesop, Rixo, Bonpoint, Le Creuset, Diptyque and The White Company. The most fun way to get there is to nip down the secret alleyway by the side of H&M opposite Bond Street station, St Christopher’s Place, which is a beautiful square with restaurants and bars, ideal in the sunshine. The world-famous Daunt Books, with its multiple floors and old-time charm, is definitely worth a pilgrimage too.
