MEET THE LOCAL DESIGNERS BEHIND THE NEW INTERIORS AT THE ORANGE

MEET THE LOCAL DESIGNERS BEHIND THE NEW INTERIORS AT THE ORANGE

When we decided to restore your beloved Belgravia pub The Orange back to its former glory, we knew we wanted to work with local artisans from our neighbours on Pimlico Road. Dubbed ‘the home of British interior design’ it has become famous worldwide for its plethora of contemporary designers and craftsmen, making everything from rugs to furniture. As champions of both the traditional and the local, we wanted to help preserve some of these historic crafts, so it was a no-brainer to work with designers on our own doorstep.

Explaining the thought behind the refurb, Sam Pearman said: “Taking iconic pubs across London and restoring them, with a modern eye, to their former splendour is what we do at Cubitt House and we’re so excited to do just this for The Orange. The pub has such a rich history, once a brewery and then since a meeting spot for Londoners, celebrities and royals over the years, it earned a name for itself in past decades for its buzzing ambience and generous offering. It’s so sad to see the decline of places like this when their foundations have so much promise – beautiful buildings with centuries of history. We hope our take on The Orange shines a light on this.”

Georgie Pearman led the redesign. She knew that she wanted to maintain the original stone features and wooden floors throughout, but she updated the fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings using neighbouring artisans, focusing on a mix of modern, antique and bespoke pieces.

The ground-floor walls have been adorned in earthy hues of terracotta, sage and yellow using paints from Edward Bulmer Natural Paint, whose shop is located opposite the pub and boutique hotel, and specialises in sustainable, plant-based formulations. Next to music, lighting is of the utmost importance for creating the right vibe in a pub. Our hanging rattan lamps are from Soane Britain, while the bronze concertinaed spotlights are from And Objects, the brand set up by interior designer Martin Brudnizki (famed for his work at Annabel’s Member’s Club and new hotel Broadwick Soho).

Meanwhile, a new wrap-around bar takes centre stage in the greatly extended ground-floor bar area, where you can perch on the stylish high stools and watch the new charcuterie chef at work. Elsewhere, there are beautiful velvet window seats, plus the new Vault area, where live music will play, and which can be cordoned off via a velvet curtain.

Our popular first-floor dining rooms – which are multi-levelled,  reminiscent of a historic coaching inn, with plenty of nooks and crannies – have been given an update via wallpaper from Downing Street favourite Lulu Lytle’s Soane Britain. When the sun shines, the roof terrace and street-side seating are dressed up with beautiful greenery to form the backdrop to your blood orange martinis.

For overnight guests, the four bedrooms have been redesigned in the style of a Belgravian boutique hotel, using hand-crafted contemporary furniture from The Lacquer Company, plus fabrics and objects sourced from Nina Campbell’s flagship store in Pimlico. The wallpaper was made bespoke by Linwood, in colourways to compliment the design of the rooms, while Fermoie’s Popple lamp shades in green and blue add a playful pop of colour – buy them yourself at the store two doors down.
