THE ART OF SUNDAY AT CUBITT HOUSE

THE ART OF SUNDAY AT CUBITT HOUSE

Discover the Art of Sunday at Cubitt House with traditional British roasts, warm fires, and a historic pub atmosphere.

This autumn, Cubitt House is embracing the Art of Sunday with the iconic tradition of the  classic British Sunday roast. From The Thomas Cubitt in Belgravia to The Grazing Goat in Marylebone, our beautifully British pubs come alive each Sunday with roaring fires, English ales and the comforting aroma of roast dinners. Several of our pubs have seen Sundays in London since the 1700s, time-worn with the grooves of drinkers gone by, and they continue to connect their regulars not just to a sense of history, but a sense of community too.

Celebrating the Tradition of British Sunday Roasts

The British Sunday roast is more than just a meal—it’s a cultural institution. Originating in the 15th century during the reign of King Henry VII, the tradition began as a simple gathering after Sunday church services. Families would place a cut of meat in the oven before heading to church, returning to the mouthwatering aroma of roasting beef, lamb, or chicken, accompanied by crisp roast potatoes and rich, velvety gravy. Those without their own ovens would leave their joint of meat at the local bakery to cook in the cooling bread ovens, ready in time for lunch.

Rooted in Britain’s agricultural rhythm, the roast became a symbol of abundance in Britain, offering a moment in the week to pause, share stories, and celebrate togetherness. Whether the meal was served at a grand manor or a modest village home, nothing went to waste—leftovers were often transformed into pies, stews, or sandwiches for the week ahead.

“We are just custodians of these beautiful buildings, and a Sunday is when we really see them come to life – with the clattering of cutlery and clinking of glasses all bouncing off the beamed ceilings,”

Sam Pearman – Co-Chair

Even today, the Sunday roast remains a comforting ritual, whether savoured at home or in one of London’s finest historic pubs. With its roots in community and celebration, this iconic meal has stood the test of time, a delicious reminder of the importance of gathering around the table with the ones we love.

The Cubitt House Experience: Sundays at their Best

Each of our beautifully restored pubs transforms into a relaxed and lively setting come Sundays, echoing the charm of London’s heritage. With careful renovations that preserve the buildings’ original features and enhance their character, our spaces are designed for history, comfort and charm in equal measure. From friends gathering for a leisurely afternoon to families enjoying their weekly roast, Sundays at Cubitt House are about slowing down, savouring life, and creating moments that feel timeless.

“There’s much that’s magical about a pub – it’s so fundamental to the British way of life, and the ultimate Sunday roast is such a huge part of that tradition. It makes me think of comfort, hearty food and of course crispy potatoes.”

Ben Tish, Chef Director

The Star of the Show: The Roast Menu

The Cubitt House Sunday roast menu features carefully selected cuts like succulent Cotswold chicken served with bread sauce, rich Angus beef rump paired with horseradish, and tender pork belly with apple sauce. Each dish is accompanied by perfectly crisp duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal greens, and, of course, golden Yorkshire puddings, all brought together with Ben Tish’s signature gravy, poured generously.

The roast is more than a meal—it’s a communal experience, and not complete without saving a scrap or two in case a Jack Russell or Labrador is patiently waiting under the table for leftovers. Sundays at Cubitt House are all about comfort, togetherness, and a feast worth sharing.

Drinks and Desserts: The Perfect Pairings

No Sunday feast at Cubitt House is complete without the perfect drink to complement the roast.

Whether it’s a crisp pint of English ale, a bold glass of red from our extensive wine list, or a classic Bloody Mary to ease into the afternoon, the drinks menu at Cubitt House is as thoughtfully curated as the food. For those looking to elevate the experience, a Black Velvet—Guinness topped with Champagne—pairs beautifully with oysters or a pre-roast tipple at the bar.

A classic British Sunday wouldn’t be complete without something sweet to round off the afternoon. Picture a steaming Sticky Toffee Pudding, rich with toffee sauce, or a bubbling seasonal fruit crumble topped with a generous pour of custard. For chocolate lovers, our baked chocolate pudding is the perfect indulgence to share. Each pudding, served at candlelit tables, captures the heart of British comfort food, ensuring your Sunday lunch finishes on a warm, satisfying note.
